OpenEdge, created and sold by Progress, is a tightly integrated database/programming platform. It is one of the first what we call “fourth generation” languages that that have their origins in the 1980s.
There are literally thousands of applications developed on the OpenEdge platform. It is likely the top embedded database in the world. What this means is, there are companies that write software to perform specific tasks, and that work produces data. This resulting data requires management, so it can be organized, modified, stored and retrieved as needed—thus, a database.
Popular database platforms include Microsoft SQL and Oracle—both of which are good but are expensive to manage in time, required talent, and hardware. Instead, companies look to OpenEdge for a solid, scalable, reliable and inexpensive solution.
